"Outpost of Progress" - Joseph Conrad | Caught Between Cultures Klett
Summary:
The two main protagonists of the story Kayerts and Carlier are sent to an trading station on a river in Africa (Congo). The previous represent of the trading company died of fever, at least, that is what Makola says. Makola lives together with his family at the station and it is his job to buy and stock ivory. Additionally he’s responsible for ten black station workers, who have to work at the station. Near the station lives a native tribe under the leading of Gobila. The tribe behaves friendly towards the station inhabitants and delivers them local goods. During the six months Kayerts and Carlier have to wait for the next steamer to bring further provisions, a group of black strangers come to the compound and Makola talks to them. The next day Kayerts and Carlier get to know that Makola has arranged a deal with the strangers. He sells the 10 station workers in return for 6 tusks. The two protagonists have a bad conscience concerning the deal Makola made. The steamer is late and their provisions are drawing to a close what leads to deterioration of their mental and physical condition. In this way, Kayerts and Carlier start to argue about sugar Carlier wants to put into his coffee. The discussion gets out of control and Kayerts shoots Carlier although Carlier isn’t armed at all. In the end, the steamer reaches the station and the director founds Kayert’s body hanging on the cross with his tongue stuck out.
